Gerald Durrell’s books made Corfu famous to millions of readers, and the television series The Durrells made it famous all over again, not least to American audiences on PBS Masterpiece. San Stefano belongs to both stories.
On the balcony
Gerald Durrell was among those who came up to San Stefano for an evening drink on the balcony, looking across to the mainland, along with Vivien Leigh and Roger Furse. The visitors’ books record that world of Corfu: writers, naturalists, actors and the island families who knew them all.
The series
The house appeared in The Durrells as the Ferrari family home, in series three, episode five.
A Durrell stay
- Durrell’s Corfu books are on the library shelves.
- Spring is the naturalist’s season: wild orchids, birds and the island Gerald wrote about. We can arrange a local botanist or bird guide.
- The White House at Kalami, home of Lawrence and Nancy Durrell, makes a beautiful day out up the coast.
- Nature, walking and painting groups are welcome to take the whole house for a weekend or a week.
